Day of the Dead (Dia De Los Muertos) is a two day holiday that reunites the living and dead. Families create ofrenda's (Offerings) to honor their departed family members that have passed. These altars are decorated with bright yellow marigold flowers, photos of the departed, and the favorite foods and drinks of the one being honored. The offerings are believed to encourage visits from the land of the dead as the departed souls hear their prayers, smell their foods and join in the celebrations!
Day of the Dead is a rare holiday for celebrating death and life. It is unlike any holiday where mourning is exchanged for celebration.
Day of the Dead is celebrated in central and southern Mexico during the chilly days of November 1 & 2.
The gates of heaven are opened at midnight on October 31, and the spirits of all deceased are allowed to reunite with their families for 24 hours. On November 2, the spirits of the adults come down to enjoy the festivities that are prepared for them.
My oil is special to me as it's one that was created to honor my abuelita. I designed this oil to be open ended for you, meaning, you can add to this oil. You can add this oil to the candle you are anointing and add elements that speak to your ancestors. I have however added the common offerings of Corn husks (to symbolize tamales) Tequila, Cascarilla to represent skulls/calaveras, Chili peppers, which is used in almost every latino dish, and of course Marigolds! Marigolds are believed to be the pathways that guide the spirits to their ofrenda's. The flower’s vibrant colors and scent attract the departed souls, as they return to feast on their favorite foods. They are called “Flor de Muerto” (Spanish for Flower of Dead) and they symbolize the beauty and fragility of life.
